Back Pain Treatment Information

by Health and Wellness Guru

If you suffer from back pain, it is important to know that back pain treatment can vary, depending on the type of pain you experience. Back pain can manifest itself in many different ways, and for a myriad of different reasons. Skeletal issues, nerve damage, muscular strain, accidents involving virtually any other part of the body, or other types of physical trauma, can trigger it. One may suffer from acute back pain, with a clear cause and solution, or from ongoing, or chronic, back pain, whose cause is not always readily identifiable, and whose effects are generally more debilitating. Depending on the type and severity of pain experienced, treatment for back pain can range from the ingestion of over-the-counter pain medicine, to the use of acupuncture or massage, or in very serious cases, to surgery. The following is an overview of the various types of back pain treatments available. One should always bear in mind, however, that no treatment should be undertaken without the supervision of a doctor, and that chronic back pain may be symptomatic of a larger health issue that needs to be addressed.

Nearly every individual at some point experiences acute back pain. It is characterized by occasional muscular or skeletal discomfort in various areas of the back, which could be the result of any number of events. Young people experience acute back pain most often because of sports related injuries or strain, while others may succumb to back pain after sitting or standing too long in one position. For these types of acute occurrences, treatment is relatively mild, and may include the use of pain relievers or anti-inflammatory drugs such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, both available over-the-counter at most pharmacies, specific stretches designed to open up and relieve the tight muscles in the back, or the application of heat or cold patches. Lower back pain treatment may include the introduction of an exercise regimen to help strengthen those core muscles, which may be strained or too weak to support, various activities. Specific regimens that occasionally prove helpful in these cases include yoga, pilates, Alexander technique, and Feldenkreis.

Untreated, acute back pain has the potential to turn into something more serious. Severe back pain treatment is harder to pinpoint, since different methods of treatment may be effective for different people, depending on the causes of their pain or injury. For these more severe instances, individuals may resort to massage therapy, visits to the chiropractor, acupuncture, or more serious pain relievers as prescribed by sports doctors or general practitioners. In very serious cases, doctors may resort to prescribing steroid injections or muscle relaxants to deal with spasms.

Chronic back pain treatment may include any combination of those treatments listed above, with the addition of treatment intended to correct the cause for the chronic pain. Depending on the root cause of the pain, steps that may be taken can electronic nerve stimulation or surgery. Bear in mind that these options for back pain treatment should only be considered in the most severe of circumstances, when no other solution appears to bring about any long-term improvement.
